  •  That's why I think... (none)
...there is more opposition to the Nuclear Option than we know. The Senators don't want to become more like Congressmen.
    •  Yes, you're thinking like a Senator (none)
Pulling the nuclear trigger would not only dismantle Our Government As We Know It, but it would be a huge step down for the Senators. That by itself always made me think that this is a game of chicken our side can win.
      •  What's more (none)
When we retake the senate, they know that we then could and almost certain would use it to pass through all sorts of legislation and confirmations that would be loath to Republicans--especially if the president was also a Democrat. The prospect of that alone should be enough to scare the bejeezus out of any senator with an above body temperature IQ (which of course, not a few Repubs don't).

I also suspect that once we did manage to pass through all the bills and judges and secretaries we wanted, we'd then rule to restore many of these rules, including the one that allows a bare 51 seat majority to change senate rules. It would be the rule change of all rule changes, one that effectively changes itself once it's passed. Almost Escherian in its seeming illogic.

    •  it would make moderate senate republicans (none)
utterly powerless to demand pork in exchange for their loyalty, since a mere 50+VP wouldbe enough to pass everything. to say nothing of what sort of crazy liberal stuff we could ram through if we got back to 51 in '06.
