On one hand, you are right that he has won many parliamentary games in 2005.   Reid is good at saying no and winning at it.  In this case, it may well be hopeless with senators (like HRC for crying out loud) not going along no matter what, so therefore the "game" is already over.  What Kerry is doing is saying "fight anyway", so that it is on record that at least SOME DEMOCRATS fought until the end against this guy.  Then when, say (God forbid), Roe v. Wade was overturned, Kerry and other senators like him can say "I fought against that bastard.  We didn't have the numbers, but I fought until the end to stop him."  Have you considered that Kerry, with all of his history, is truly and sincerely apart from any political ambition, appalled by the idea of this guy sitting on the SC?  And, yeah, he read our comments last weekend, and knows EXACTLY how we feel, and is honoring that.  Since he agrees with us, I don't have a problem with him fighting this even if he ends up getting seriously cut and wounded from a battle so against the odds.

Part of it is that I believe Reid IS planning a filibuster, but just playing his cards close as always.  I may be missing an angle somewhere, but as far as I can see, a filibuster, regardless of outcome, is a win for Reid.

If that's the case, then I suspect Kerry has just gone offsides here.  He would know Reid is planning a filibuster, but he's showboating.  It has happened before.
