  •  "conviction"? What complete and utter... (none)
...horseshit. The old coot is trying to get back in so he can die in office and have a big funeral in the Rotunda. The ultimate stroke to his enormous ego. This vote, and his demogogic justification for it, wipes out, in one sad, politically inspired move, all his defense of the Constitution over the last five years. Sound and fury that, when push came to shove, signified less than nothing. What a sad, shameful, pathetic and disgraceful end to an admirable run at statesmanship.

Other than on the unitary executive claim, the complaints on Alito are not ones that would necessarily appeal to Byrd. He's a social conservative, and HE BELIEVES IN THAT. Moderates do not believe less passionately than non-moderates. They just believe things that are at the center of the spectrum.

If you have a complaint, it should be that Byrd was not appealed to in the correct manner: i.e. in terms of populism (favoring corporations over workers), and executive privledge, and that the voices screaming social conservative made a better pitch than those saying populism. Because things like choice is not going to be sufficient to sway someone like Byrd.
