  •  And if it was "all about Roe", so what? (none)
A lot of people above are complaining that this was all about Roe and that that wasn't the way to win.  I would have like to see more emphasis on the unitary executive theory, and I'm more pessimistic than most about how the reversal of Roe will affect the Democratic Party, but even I think that this focus on Roe will help us down the line.

Roe is now more likely to be overturned or entirely eviscerated.  And when it happens, people -- not just progressives interested in politics -- will look back on these hearings and remember that the Democrats at least tried to filibuster Alito based on Roe.  And that is one of the few things that may say the party -- and the country -- down the line.

I have too many other thoughts to delve into here, but I will reemphasize that the problem is not so much that some Democrats are defecting (we are not the lockstep party and never will be) but that we don't have enough Democrats elected that we can allow for some defections.  We need to smack the party over the head and let them know how to conduct hearings and how never to foul their own nest, as Byrd has.  (Sorry, another inadverant pun there.)  But the Democratic party remains the only viable vehicle for change until we move to a proportional representation system.
