  •  Our biggest fear (none)
beyond what will happen with Alito on the court, is that senators will be hushed and cowed by the rhetoric of the media and the nay-saying of Harry Reid and Durbin and will not rise to the filibuster.  The media wants to paint you and Kerry's move as being for politics.  If there are not enough votes, and the two of you do not call everyone out to lay their cards on the table by invoking AN ATTEMPT at filibuster, then we will have lost three fold:

We will have lost without a fight.
The media will say, "They only postured for political gain" and many of us here will wonder.
And we will have Sam Alito.

I am all for going down in a fight. I realize we may lose.

Let me tell you a sad little story.  My son, now a brilliant young man of 13 who posts here sometimes, got interested in politics in the fall of 2000. He was in the third grade. We worked hard for Gore.  Gore fought hard but lost when we had the election stolen.  In 2004, we feel Kerry concede too early. My son is now looking at his future and wondering what kind of role models we have for integirity and virtue and standing up for what one believes in. I so want him to see in this dire danger to our country that there are some heroes.

Senator Byrd has shown his true colors. The lesson we took from this as parents for our children was this, "It is hard for an old dog to really cahnge his ways, and when confronted with a racist, it is hard to resist one's past."

If, on Monday, you and Senator Kerry and Senator Clinto do NOT rise for a filibuster, the moment will be lost in time, and we will suffer more of a defeat than just getting Sam Alito on the bench.  And that alone is far worse than I can even fathom.

Please, I am literally begging you and Senator Kerry. Do not let us down. Fight this one. Even if you lose the nomination vote or the filibuster, which is likely, I want to go down with my fists in teh air and be able to say to my son, "We are Democrats."
