  •  I'm going to put this as nicely as I can. (4.00)
It's a ------- waste of time to try to impress your enemies with your manners. It is also a moronic ------- tactic to let them dictate which of your leaders to support. They do not have your best ------- interests in mind. This is not ------- rocket science.

This is tangentially related to the idea that one should also refrain from internalizing and repeating one's opponents' spin and ------- talking points - which is why I would not quote the Wall Street ------ Journal as a guide to ------- manners.

Finally, Peggy Noonan is a Republican hack whose ------- job it is to convince people to support Republicans and oppose Democrats. Consider for a moment the idea that she might have ulterior ------- motives when she says, "I just don't ------- understand how you can listen to someone as ------- crazy as Howard ------- Dean."

p.s. The reason I'm inordinately irritated by this post/argument is that I've watched the Democratic party run through two presidential elections now in which we let the media and the Republicans attack our leaders for "gaffes" and "attacks" and "lies" that they - the media and Republicans, whether acting in concert or coincidentally - obsess over and use as bludgeons against our leaders and us as their supporters. It's a suicidally futile hope to believe that we can have a leader whose speech and strategy are unimpeachable, gaffe-free, and effective. Republicans will attack whoever is doing anything effective for their opponents, and the media will cover it, without regard to reason or civility. Stop letting them con you into looking for a perfect leader. You aren't going to find one, and even if you did, they'd attack him/her anyway.

Or at least don't bother taking etiquette lessons from their junior varsity.

    •  you are as right as Randi (Rhodes, that is) (none)
they will never apologize, never concede anything -- more tenacious than terriers, they keep coming back at an issue even when they say that they will stop.  think of Halliburton's no bid contract or the whole torture thing.  They have no respect for the American people or they'd never play so fast and loose with the facts.  And unless we fight back just as hard (although I think that simple facts will support us; no need to lie), we're screwed.

But, I still think that we can be more thoughtful in our responses to each other.
