  •  I guess facts are too boring ? (none)
    •  Well, some "facts" (none)
are getting to be kinda boring.  When they're constantly repeated as if they're the only "facts" that are important.

There are other facts to consider.  For instance, wall-to-wall, continuous SuperBowl coverage is underway!  Well, actually, it's BEEN underway since, oh, Twelfth Night.  But, I mean, what could possibly be more important than THAT?!

Sorry.  I think I screwed up my caffeine/Paxil balance this morning.

      •  I'm not saying that there aren't other issues (none)
involved - I know that there are.

I know there is racism and I'm not standing up for it, I am generally supportive of Palestine etc etc.

They have legitimate gripes - but THIS isn't one of them.

If anything it's indicative of the one of the problems that contribute to islamophobia - because some of it IS justified.

If thesse people wanted to protest or boycott because muslims were being kidnapped and tortured and bombed, I would be right there with them ( and probably so would Denmark and France and Germany).

Instead they boycott because countries won't ban blasphemy against the prophet.

        •  Hey! Glad you're still there. (none)
I was concerned that I might have really pisswed you off with my boyish SuperBowl snark.  BTW - being from New England, I'm no big Steelers fan, but I would kinda like to see Bettis end his career with a SuperBowl ring.

Anyway, I was wondering if you'd seen the diary by Soj here.

It presents an interesting and credible hypothesis as to why the protests seemed to start only recently when the cartoons originally appeared on Sept. 30, which, ironically, cites a satirical blog as its source (presumably for inspirational purposes only <g>).  The main theme is that the Saudi leadership started rabble-rousing as a way of distracting their own people (and the Pakistanis) from their failures, particularly protecting pilgrims during the Hajj.  Maybe the literal text of the diary is not spot on, but I find the idea that chicken-shit local politics has a lot to do with this situation tremendously appealing.

Also, there's this from the BBC - interviews with Beiruit residents reacting to the embassy torching and other violent demonstrations.  A couple of them make it seem as if there are two distinct groups - those trying to make a peaceful protest and those engaging in organized mayhem.

Anyway, let me know what your take is.

          •  Actually I saw and recommended Sojs (none)
            post.

The I saw DH's saying that it was satire and went to look.

The beginning post is, indeed a satire "thank you" letter but if you look further the argument he makes (as a Saudi expat) is quite serious and sincere - it also is a very good blog.

I have also heard other reports which indicate that the local governments in middle eastern countries are using inktifada to establish their "street cred" with the rising fundamentalists in their own coountries.

            •  I agree completely. (none)
And I have to begin to wonder if a lot of us, Muslims included, aren't being used to further someone's (non-free speech, non-religious sensitivity) nefarious agenda.

I'm still skeptical of the RWC (Reynold's Wrap Cap) theories about powerful factions actually trying to bring about Armageddon.  However ...
