Looking at this from a hideous, value-free point of view, the practical problem with this particular torture program is that it doesn't seem to be working and is giving our enemies valid reasons to hate us and encourage others to hate us.

Someone can debate till the 22nd century about the merits of torturing one particular guy who seems to know how to turn off a ticking nuclear bomb that's set to go off in an day in Times Square. I'm not sure whether I agree with the evil side in that debate, but I'm sympathetic.

But what the Bush administration is doing in the real world has absolutely at all to do with the ticking bomb analogy and everything to do with Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader on the Death Star. "The tighter we clutch our hands, the more our opponents will slip through our fingers."
