If the number of pellets is really 200, that would seem to call bullshit on the "30 yards" story. A person's face is not 30 inches in diameter.

Do the math. You can approximate the area of a large man's head that faces in any one direction with, say, a piece of paper at 8.5"x11". Actual sizes will vary and will probably be smaller, but let's agree that his face is probably no bigger than that. Now calculate the ratio of the surface areas -- 8.5x11 = 94 sq in for the piece of paper, a whopping 3.14x15x15 = 710 sq in for the 30" diameter circle. So if they're roughly uniform density, less than 1/7th of the pellets would be expected to hit his face at 30 yards.

If you add in the shoulders and chest to the count, which seems dubious at best (how on earth could Cheney justify shooting at chest level into chest-deep grass?) then a lot of the pellets are still going to fly off to the sides of the head and even the sides of the body.

You might be able to get the number of pellets up to 200 if you assume the absolute worst case possible -- Whittington facing directly at the gun, with a dead-on shot right in the middle of his chest from 30 yds such that the 30" circle reaches just up to the top of his head.

Honestly, I'd say it's far more likely that the 30 yds story is bullshit.

The world won't get no better if we just let it be.

I just asked about the spray factor on another diary and someone referred me to this thread.

The Smoking Gun has an incident report up that state what we've already heard

      .28 shotgun
      7 1/2 shot
      30 yards.

But then it shows a diagram of the injury which shows it in the area of the upper left (not right) shoulder and neck, with a little to the face.

I held a ruler up to my torso, and that is less than a 12 inch circle.

Of course, its like one of those car accident diagrams which is not that specific, but the diagram does agree with the press reports of shoulder, neck, face.

If it is only a 12 inch area involved, how close would Cheney have been?

      What about Dennis Hastert?
