  •  Scotia Prince? (4.00)
CHEERS to bustle and flow.  The Port of Portland, Maine is deemed by officials to be very healthy.  Lots of tanker and container and lobstering...dry-dock services...thriving restaurants...and in three months we start getting regular ferry service from The high-speed Cat to Nova Scotia.  The only failure: the year-round water slide into Casco Bay.  But the new 10% discount oughtta fix that.

Coincidentally, I was just last night looking into ferry service from Portland to Yarmouth. Jeers to WTF is up with the Scotia Prince?  Something about toxic mold in the terminal facilities that nobody seems interested in remediating?  Shoot, the cost of a family round trip on the Cat is more than I was going to spend on the weekly cottage rental. So much for that NS vacation.
    •  The Scotia Prince isn't here anymore. (4.00)
The "mold" story was just a cover---or so the conventional wisdom goes---for the Prince owners to back out of their contract with the city.  Fact is, the mold problem was minor and was cleaned up quickly.

The Prince has been gone for over a year now.  There wasn't any service last year.  I kind of missed seeing it coming into, and out of, the harbor every night.  But my neighbors don't miss me singing "My Heart Will Go On!!" at the top of my lungs.

But we're excited about getting the Cat (I wonder if they'd consider changing it to "The Pootie?").  It's gonna be a great addition to the waterfront.  I hear there are waerskiing packages available.

      •  I <3 The Cat (4.00)
I'm very excited about The Cat coming to Portland.  I live in Boston and we drove to Bar Harbor last year to catch The Cat and it really is an amazing ship.  Even better that it will be in Portland which cuts driving time by from 6 to 2 hours (from Boston).   Definitely need to check out the tides in the Bay of Fundy again, and my partner loves scuba diving up there.
      •  Funny, it isn't here anymore either (4.00)
During the 2002-2003 winter season it ran briefly as the "Yucatan Express" between Tampa and was really inexpensive, but didn't attract as much business as they hoped and never came back. Back when we lived in Cambridge my husband and I took the Portland to Yarmouth trip--he and almost all the rest of the passengers got seasick on the ride back--I thought it seemed like a boat more suited to the calmer waters of the Gulf in winter. Oh, well.
