  •  Columbus does not have the facilities (none)
for a national convention.  The biggest thing they've got outside of Ohio Stadium is Nationwide Arena or Value City Arena, neither one of which really have the floor space for a convention.  Furthermore, there really aren't enough hotel rooms in the area; people would be spread out all over the place.  If you want the Midwest, Detroit is a better choice in terms of facilities and airport access.  Minneapolis, because of the fact that Minnesota has trended right lately, is also an interesting idea.

I oppose Phoenix, Las Vegas and Orlando strictly on the basis that they are all too hot in the summer -- which is also an argument against New Orleans.

Columbus doesn't have anywhere near the adequate public transportation that would likely be necessary.

Do not be overwhelmed by the enormity of the world's grief...You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.

I would think that the GOP would take all of this into consideration and they are still considering Columbus. It is not about being in the Midwest, it is about being in Ohio. Ohio will likely decide the election in 2008 and Columbus would be a great place to kick off the general election campaign. I am not going to pretend to be an expert on the subject, but I know people in the Ohio GOP who think they have a real shot of getting the convention in Ohio. In addition, I am told the the Nationwide Arena is more than adequate to be the venue for the event. Then  again, maybe the Democrats know something that the GOP doesnt know yet about Columbus.

I should note that I am running for a Congressional seat that includes parts of Columbus. I really am not sure about Columbus's ability to hold a convention, but I think if the GOP is considering it, then so should we as a party. All of the other cities are equally valid choices and if Columbus is not an option, then I would be equally happy with any of the other cities mentioned in this poll.
