  •  As soon as they stop (4.00)

    •  That might (4.00)
accelerate the process.  But in Iraq, other Iraqis are NOT necessarily your "own" people.  Tribe, sect, ethnicity, party.

Saddam supposedly gassed "his own" people, except that the Kurds are his "own" people in the same way that Native Americans were Andrew Jackson's "own people."

but it's hard to see why you would call such people "patriots." Seems to imply that they are fighting for their country. I've never heard that term applied as a synonym for tribal or sectarian loyalties.
        •  Weren't the KKK called "patriots" (none)
          for persecuting blacks and Catholics?

Not sure, but I thought that was the case.

        •  "Hard to see why"? (4.00)
Actually, it's hard to see WHERE I called them "patriots," 'cause I didn't.

          Look again.

This diary was about being able to think in the same terms as people who aren't you and whom you may not like, simply because it's important to know your enemy.

One of the things that tends to pass into conventional wisdom is that the winners were the good guys.  Whichever group winds up controlling the country will become known as the good guys even if they're only a tribal or sectarian group now.

White Anglo Saxon Protestants took over North America.  They were only a tribal and sectarian group.  But everything else became "ethnic."
