  •  Excellent as always and... (4.00)
..I read that same article about Balad Air Base a few weeks ago and the fact that you don't see any of that on the news just demonstrated further the disconnect between our news media and reality; at least of any relevant consensus reality. Philip K Dick would be awed by BushGOP's dystopian dialect fed so brazenly to a compliant and always willing media.

As for those bases, I refer to them as the Guantonimo Effect in the sense that BushGOP thinks they will be able to set up their little feifdoms anywhere. In this sense, they are just cess pools of ignorance and arrogance, not of the people occupying them, but of the people who decided they were a "good idea." Global Gerrymandering finally attains it's Rovian Illogical conclusion; although, I'm sure Rove was seeking collusion. Who knew the Mullahs wouldn't be interested in our money and Democracy?

Terry Gilliam couldn't have filmed this better, except I don't think he would have made this fantasy just to scare the shit out of those of us who aren't asleep. Gurdjieff was worried about a world full of sleepers. He had no idea the sleepers were the least of our problems, he never encountered BushGOPers.

    •  I like to think of them (4.00)
as the logical extension of their gated communities back home.  Romans built their villas in Britain, these suburban shut-ins with delusions of being Americans will build a sort of doll-house for Mecha-Kaitlyn and her Fightin' Freedumb Friends™.

The only difference is that THIS gated community is populated with hooded Arab men instead of surgically-altered trophy-wives.

Different kind of "action," you see.

    •  Two words: Stinger missiles (4.00)
Our "permanent" bases in Iraq are going to become Dien Bien Phus as soon as the insurgency starts to acquire shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles.  Once we're isolated enough in the country that IED's are no longer effective weapons -- i.e. when we're confined to these self-constructed prisons -- then the planes and helicopters will start coming down in the kind of numbers that will make our presence rapidly untenable.

I wonder if the KoolAid-poisoned military has figured out how to fight their way out of a hostile country when the air is denied to them.  God help our poor troops when that happens.
