  •  Bush & Bin Laden are part of the same plot (4.00)
Can people listen to the truth? I can rationally explain the real reason for the "Global War on Terror" in one paragraph.

It is MONEY, plain and simple. You see, with the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was hard to explain the GIGANTIC U.S. defense budget to the American people. So the Military Industrial Complex/Big Oil/Big Construction (i.e. Carlyle Group, Halliburton, Lockheed Martin, Boeing) had to come up with a new decades-long, ill-defined global conflict to create demand for military spending. What did they come up with? A Global War on Terrorism. Two wayward sons of leading families were groomed to be puppets for the two sides of this new Global War. Both were already in a good position, W from having worked on his father's campaigns, and Bin Laden for having been a mujahideen leader in Afghanistan. They both are black sheep sons of the Carlyle Group Empire. George W. Bush is placed as head of the free world, and Bin Laden is placed as head of world terrorism.  On the other side, money from arms dealing and drugs and other illicit activities pour into the terrorist network fiefdoms from misguided revolutionaries.  Are people this stupid?  2 Black sheep of the same business interests get placed as the leaders of both sides in a new global war and nobody is suspicious by this?  Who has the global war on terrorism really helped? Military Industrial Complex / Big Oil / Big Construction / Al Queda / Arms Dealers / International Drug Dealers / Muslim Extremists.

    •  That is really good. (none)
I am sorely tempted to run upstairs for the Reynold's Wrap.

Humor aside - it is a strange parallel, and in its own way evocative of a Kurt Vonnegut novel (thought it was "Cat's Cradle" but I can't find the pair of brothers) in which two brothers intentionally create opposing forces so as to bring meaning and focus into the lives of their followers.  But what we do get is the sense of a couple of "anti-karass' (doing the devil's work - not God's) or else a couple of really destructive granfalloons

    •  Sir or Madam, you go too far! (none)
By about 1mm. No international conspiracy necessary. Bin Laden was there. Bush came, with the PNAC plan. Just needed a rationale. OBL was known to be plotting. Bush just needed to remove the watchers and wait. The expression on Bush's face while reading My Pet Goat was just a big "Ahhhh, it's started." And it was even better than the American plotters had dared hope. However, a much smaller attack would also have sufficed. Any attack would have sufficed. Iraq was unconnected to the attack, and the Iraq war plotting had been started before it occurred. I think the sideshow in Afghanistan may not have been expected, but was immediately seen to be necessary. It's all laid out in the PNAC documents.

And don't forget to add in the tax cuts part of the package. All that war profiteering wouldn't have been so profitable if it had been taxed. So first the tax cuts, then the war.

On the Other Side, I don't see the financial plot. I really think the principals on the Other Side are just religious nutcases, unlike our principals who only pretend to be religious nutcases. They have attracted many profiteers in the arms and drug trades, but in their case I think the profiteers came later, rather than being the instigators.

Other than those small quibbles, IMHO you've got it right on the money, so to speak.

Many years ago, I was eating a late dinner in a an American-Lebanese restaurant during the war in Lebanon. I was joined at table by the proprietors, and took the opportunity to ask them why there was a war in Lebanon. They said, "It's not religion, it's not ethnicity, it's not nationality, it's the money. The generals see the opportunity to line their pockets, and they need a war to do it."

      •  if you can see the war profiteering power grab (none)
that has been in full effect the past 5 years you are well ahead of most people.  The 1mm doesn't matter at all.

Until Americans are able to face what has gone on, there won't be anything but a downward spiral along the same lines as we have seen.  More war, less civil rights, more corruption.  The Constitution is being frayed and will continue to be until people face the ugly truth of it all.

        •  And I think another thing that's going on (none)
is that this war is about political power. It's purpose is to establish the Permanent Republican Majority. The money is just a way to get the power. Or maybe the power is the way to get the money. Either way.
