JEERS to misplaced priorities. A bunch of 007 fans have created a web site protesting Daniel Craig replacing Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. If the producers were wondering where they could find the special tools to put in Bond's Aston Martin, I think the "tools" have found them.

JEERS to a lack of common sense. I don't want port security, border security, airline security or any security to be handled by non-U.S. firms. Here's my compromise, I'll accept UAE state-company control of the ports if Bush accepts Palestinian/Hamas control of his Secret Service detail. And can someone explain to me why the President is so adamant that the ports deal goes through?

    •  James Bond was so sixties. (4.00)
They should have put the series to rest when Connery quit the first time.  Not even to mention Steve Martin as Inspector Closeau, and I've even heard there are plans for a remake of the Wild Bunch. Is nothing sacred. Charlie Kaufman most be the only one in Hollywood with any creativity.

    •  Why Is Bush Adamant About the UAE Deal? (4.00)
'Cause he always hasta win no matter what, you big poopie-heads!

There are a lot of things about Bush that don't require complex explanations.  He has the emotional maturity of a spoiled five-year old. That's all that's necessary for a veto threat or support for obviously stupid or criminal actions.

I'm talking about the traditional definition of emotional maturity, off course. In our modern culture, public temper tantrums are common in politics.

And can someone explain to me why the President is so adamant that the ports deal goes through?

Because they needed a strawman for the Congressional Republicans to oppose - so they can stand up during their campaigns later this year and say they didn't just hand over everything Bush wanted. See, they're really caring, and you should vote for them, because they didn't "let" Bush "get away with it". wink nudge

Of all the explanations I've heard, this one is definitely the most plausible...but I'm still not 100% convinced.

        1. It dramatically weakens the president on his number one issue of security and while Republicans would be able to say "I didn't support that", the Democrat could counter by saying "But with this super-secretive Administration, how many other potentially disasterous security plans did you support that we don't yet know about"?

        2. It ties his administration much closer to the failings of the Department of Homeland Security and allows Democrats to continually raise the ghosts of New Orleans. So why the Republican reiterates "I didn't support the President's ports plan", the Democrat would be able to say "But you did support the creation of the inherently broken DHS and the appointments of Mike Brown and Michael Chertoff."
