RESEARCH ON CASCADING FAILURE, CRITICALITY AND SELF-ORGANIZATION
    IN LARGE BLACKOUTS

Every single calorie we eat is backed by at least a calorie of oil, more like ten. In 1940 the average farm in the United States produced 2.3 calories of food energy for every calorie of fossil energy it used. By 1974 (the last year in which anyone looked closely at this issue), that ratio was 1:1. And this understates the problem, because at the same time that there is more oil in our food there is less oil in our oil. A couple of generations ago we spent a lot less energy drilling, pumping, and distributing than we do now. In the 1940s we got about 100 barrels of oil back for every barrel of oil we spent getting it. Today each barrel invested in the process returns only ten, a calculation that no doubt fails to include the fuel burned by the Hummers and Blackhawks we use to maintain access to the oil in Iraq.

There was a 500 percent increase in per capita sugar consumption in Britain between 1860 and 1890, around the time when the life expectancy of a male factory worker was seventeen years. By the end of the century the average Brit was getting about one sixth of his total nutrition from sugar, exactly the same percentage Americans get today - double what nutritionists recommend.

Corn, rice, and wheat are especially adapted to catastrophe. It is their niche. In the natural scheme of things, a catastrophe would create a blank slate, bare soil, that was good for them. Then, under normal circumstances, succession would quickly close that niche. The annuals would colonize. Their roots would stabilize the soil, accumulate organic matter, provide cover. Eventually the catastrophic niche would close. Farming is the process of ripping that niche open again and again. It is an annual artificial catastrophe, and it requires the equivalent of three or four tons of TNT per acre for a modem American farm. Iowa's fields require the energy of 4,000 Nagasaki bombs every year.

I will tell you here and tell you now with no equivocation: THE 9/11 ATTACKS WERE NOT DONE BY TERRORISTS.

There is absolutely no need for the PATRIOT Act, the FEMA Police, Homeland Security, airline and stadium searches and warrantless monitoring of every phone call and e-mail conversation we make.

In the name of a false threat that never existed, all of our rights and freedoms have been trivialized.

Notice how no one questions our Empire now?
Notice how the War on Terror is really a War for
    Suburbia and Cheap gas?

"We have about 50 percent of the world's wealth but only 6.3 percent of its population," Kennan wrote. "In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we an afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction."

"The day is not to far off," Kennan concluded, "when we are going to have to deal in straight power concepts."

    Pentagon Climate Report

A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world.

Finally, if you're still with me. Math(log log linearization-
think Bell Curve) shows that oil production mirrors oil
discovery on a 15 year time shift and that human pop
growth mirrors consumption on a 5 plus year time shift.

    PeakOil was last December.

No more oil, no more humans.  It is that simple.

    Expect human Stabilization in months.

I can't tell where the expert's thoughts end and where yours begin.

My guess is that if you look hard enough, you can find an expert for every theory. Kind of like the 1000 monkeys typing thing. Rachel Carlson has caused more death and disease than all other actors and policies since. If she was a plague, HIV/AIDS wouldn't show up on the same chart due to comparative insignificance.

I don't understand the wealth commentary. Should we enact policies to raise their standard of living, or lower ours? Do we get to tell them what to do to raise it, or do we just throw money at the problem?

The only things we should provide as foreign aid are free market capitalism and our balance of democracy and preserved civil rights. That is the stuff of which the rising tide is made. Private enterprise should invest in micro-loans.

If ExxonMobile had an option to pay double for your gas, and the extra funds were used to reduce pollution and develop alternative energy sources, would you buy it? If Wal*Mart had an option to charge an amount equal to its corporate profit on the transaction, and the extra funds were used to offset employee health care needs or to pay extra to the disadvantaged employees of the manufacturers of the goods you bought, would you shop there?

If you wouldn't do it voluntarily, why would you demand the government extortion of those same funds for those same reasons?
