  •  Really? (none)
Seems to me McCain is a lot more popular plus a lot better known than Dole was, plus the media loves him.  His reputation as "maverick" is going to be hard to counter.
    •  The Republican base (none)
will eat him alive in the primaries. He might be electable if he gets the nomination, but I don't think he can do it.
    •  Yes he's more popular than Dole. (none)
      Im overstating it.

BUT he will be pretty visibly old in 08. He will have the Gephardt loser taint. He will not have a Bush-like unified base. I really doubt he will do as well with Independants as we think he might, since most INdies these days are going to be eager NOT to pull the lever for a 'pub.

      Etc etc

I think the GOPs best chance is to pull a young unknown Clinton-like charmer from their butts.

I wouldn't predict a lot of indie support for McCain - we see how he rolls over for his party, and that's a direct contradiction with the term "independent".  Dems will have a lot to overcome, especially when the media bias is so overwhelming, but I don't think the 2008 battle will be fought over independent voters.

The whole episode with his torture bill, especially the double-smirking photo op, sums it up for me.  He sticks to his guns when it boosts his image, but rolls over when he thinks people aren't looking.  I don't think the man is entirely unprincipled, but he's repeatedly shown that his principles can be compromised.
