        i also lived in russia for a time (just several months though) in the 90's.  i remember seeing some analysis based on soviet generals and kremlin insiders saying that they knew it was over in the early 80's and were ready to throw in the towel, but they held on as long as possible because they saw reagan as one of these crazy nationalist ideologues who wasn't to be trusted.

        did you ever hear that?  it was in the era before "everything written goes on the internet" so i haven't been able to turn it up online, unfortunately.

          Reagan's attitude prolonged the inevitable downfall. Afterall, Greedy Bastard Inc. was making tons of money making military toys to battle a non-threat with no one to stop them. Then Iraq become the non-threat threat to spends millions on. That become obsolete, now we have Iran....
