  •  Caller ID is a great thing (4.00)
Whenever I get a call that is listed as "unavailable", has no number listed, or says private, I assume it is a sales call, collection call, or some other corporate entity that is calling. Whenever that happens, my first words after hitting the recorder attached to my phone are:

"Hello, this call is being recorded. How may I help you?"

8 times out of 10 the caller hangs up and calls back. When I answer again they usually hang up and call later, to the same greeting. There have been times that it provoked a negative or curious/wary reaction. Some bill collector insisted that I turn off the recorder since I "had" to speak with him and he "didn't have to consent to being recorded", to which I laughed in his face, to wit, "Ha, ha, ha!"

Once my auto finance company rep engaged in a long debate about why they had the right to record my call and I don't.

My favorites are those calls where you pick up the phone and hear "Please wait for a very important call...". This was from Cingular on a disputed bill I absolutely refused to pay and gave them permission to "ruin my credit" (because fuck them, thats why). SO I waited, and when the rep came on my first words were "Hi, this call is being recorded by me on my end for quality assurance." They IMMEDIATELY said "please hold for my manager". He took too long, so I hung up. They kept calling back and I kept up on my end until finally I got a call from a live person who threatened legal action if I didn't stop "harassing" his reps. I laughed, gave him my lawyer's name and number, and hung up. Cingular sold my account to some nasty collection agency with whose agents I continue my game. I love it.I don't think they like it at all.

...and now that I'm cooking with THAT line of seasoning...

    •  That's against the law. (4.00)
Call a consumer advocate lawyer. There are many great ones that work mostly on contingency fees only. They are harassing you and don't believe a word they say about lawsuits etc. Most by years old past due accounts. My son is an attorney for consumers and there are also several class action suits being filed against the illegal collection agency practices.

Frodo failed....Bush has got the ring!

    •  It sounds like you should stop being a jackass (none)
and pay your bills. You'll save yourself some time.

(I concede I don't know the full context here)

    •  Privacy Manager (none)
is available in this part of California.  If a callers name and/or number is blocked from the caller ID, the "manager" tells the caller that we don't accept unidentified calls.  It then gives them instructions on how to unblock their identity, OR calls us and gives them an opportunity to say who they are.  WE then have the option of accepting or rejecting the call.  Now that we have this, we will never be without it.

And Bill O'Riley is a hot headed, pompous jerk.
