    It's legal as long as one party to the call knows they are being recorded.

    I did it to an old landlord of mine who would not make some seriously needed repairs around the house I was renting from him. I finally got tired of dealing with him, and filed a complaint with the city building inspector--for which he was cited. That same night he snuck out behind my house and shut off my water. I called him, (while recording the call) and he admitted that he had done it, and tried to tell me I owed him several hundred dollars for water--even though the lease plainly stated that water was included.

    The tape was allowed as evidence in the lawsuit I filed against him (and won). The story also made the front page of the local newspaper. He's not a landlord anymore--nobody will rent from him.

    I used my computer to make the calls. A VOIP program called SIPhone will let you make 5 free phone calls a day. (I don't know if it still does, though.) I used another free program (wavepad) to record the call.
