    I was often the only Black kid in class, and I understand the way you feel. I think you handled it the right way. The teachers I had often told us that, "this song was a negro spiritual and it was song by slaves who wanted to be free", at 7 years old thats about as complex as it needs to be. The teacher should just mention that "a long time ago america kept Blacks as slaves and this was a song from then. Sometimes the song was used in a mean way but its also part of our history.". just so the kids looking back years later know that at least the teacher thought about it.
