Your reference to Field of Dreams caught my eye. Now I like message movies, and liked most of the so-called "left wing" stuff that came out this year. It kind of keeps my focus on political issues in a visceral way. I am often overwhelmed at work and occasionally neglect the political scene. But message movies, though they keep my indignation quotient high, don't choke me up. Field of Dreams did that. A friend told me that he didn't watch the movie because he didn't like baseball. I told him that baseball was just the backdrop. I think that a lot of people of my generation identified with the father/son relationship. My father also died too early. I think a lot of us would like to have another opportunity to play catch ("have a catch" -what a bullshit phrase. I have never heard it used. I was surprised that Costner, a real baseball fan, let that one go by.); or to heal the wounds that words can create; or to have them see our children grow into adulthood. Yeah, that scene where he introduces his family got to me.
Movies that resurrect a particular memory can do that. "Philadelphia" was another one. The death scene caught me totally by surprise by the way it just instantly jerked the emotion right to the surface. I can't think of another movie that affected me that way. It was like I was back in the hospital watching my brother die again.
Incidentally, I liked Crash, but I wasn't particularly moved by it.

"Have a catch" is definitely Brooklyn-ese.  Not a "bullshit expression" -- but not indigenous to the Midwest!

I learn something everyday. My apologies to the Ebbets Field folks. In a movie set in the mid-west, "play catch" should definitely have been used.
