    A song about picking bales of cotton is certainly about the life of the cotton picking slave. To soft soap or romanticize that is silly.
    As some have pointed out, it wasn't just slaves picking cotton in the hot sun.

    While the slavery experience was unique to the African-Americans (and it is right that we do everything we can not to forget this), the poverty experience was shared between slave, ex-slave, sharecropper, and poor white alike.

    These poor whites sang these songs as well.  Let's not erase them from history.
