I thought I was safely past having to deal with creationism per se, having no school-age children, but then I returned to school myself at the local community college.

One of my classmates in intro physics was trying to start a preclass debate about "can you prove evolution?". (My alarm bells went off.) He started talking about a $250,000 prize for anyone providing proof, and rattled off a series of 6 unrelated "evolution" questions. A couple of exchanges later it was clear that we were in the wacky world of "Dr." Kent Hovind.

"Oh, him," I said, ostentatiously returning to scrutinizing my homework. The rest of the class sat, withdrawn, wishing the problem would just go away.

It didn't, of course. The guy started out class with Hovind's question on conservation of angular momentum - which was actually on topic for the class - and then two minutes later we were off into the realms of biology. The instructor hadn't heard the preclass discussion and didn't realize at first that his class was being hijacked. But one of us gave him an out ("can we leave biology for biology class?").

Of course, our agent provocateur had attracted attention and a knot of debaters collected around him after class.

I hate having to defend against these guys.
