    is excellent.  I also saw her speak at my college, and her new book, "Becoming Justice Blackmun," is essential reading for any student or fan of Supreme Court history.

    Not having the full context of her remarks, I find it hard to condemn them.  After all, Bush v. Gore is widely and correctly regarded as one of the worst Supreme Court decisions in history.  And the majority would have changed with one vote, making the outcome sensible.  So, to say one justice may have been having a "bad hair day" is not as dismissive of the injustice of 2000 as you might be implying.

      means "an instance in which one is emphatically not looking one's best."  So it was for the Court on the day that Bush v. Gore was announced.  No need for the original poster to read more into that that.  Agreed on the kudos for Greenhouse.

      My apologies to students who took my U.S. Government class in the 90s: evidently the Constitution doesn't limit Presidential power after all. Who knew?
