I mean it.  And it's that thinking that is exactly what keeps our Senators on their knees.

Even if it's a figurative nose bloodying, a nose bloodying is called for sometimes and Democrats rarely stand and deliver and thing more than a nipple twisting.

The reason people like guys like Paul Hackett is because they project a sense of toughness, a sense that if you get in their face, they will act, not just talk, and damn the consequences.

That is why people have a visceral reaction to certain movie stars as well.  John Wayne, Clint Eastwood or Harrison Ford became audience favorites because their characters took action.  They projected that they were "men" in the traditional sense.

George Bush does this as well.  His cocky walk, his unfussy clothes, his simple speech patterns and so calculated identification with manual labor (cutting brush on his faux ranch) and physical activity.  The idea that he doesn't do nuance and he doesn't question his past decisions all play into it.

Whereas Kerry wouldn't even defend himself from the smear on his service.

Oh no, I mean it.  Feingold punches Senator Allard in the nose on the floor of the Senate and people around the country will say, "Hey that guy is tough. I like that."

but there comes a point when even pacifists can only be pushed so far. Here's a party that has stolen billions from us, let an entire American city drown, desecrated the Constitution, killed and maimed over ten thousand young Americans, murdered tens of thousands of Iraqis -- not to mention destroying their country for a generation -- done nothing to stop the polar ice caps from melting, and, on the side, tortured and sexually abused people all over the world .... and we're supposed to be restrained!?

Actually, though, as satisfying as it would be to see about a million of the worst Republicans beaten black and blue on CSpan every day for the rest of my life, I think it would in the long run be much healthier for all of us if we just found a way to fine them for all their crimes. Imagine Dear Leader's Faux Ranche up for sale and Ginna & Tonic slinging hash at the local diner to save up money for their parents' bail. Yes, non-violence can be fun too!
