I was at a democratic club meeting last night in eastern Hillsborough county and the Executive direction of the Florida DEC was there. He told us we should worry about Katherine Harris, no matter what the polls say. She may not poll well now against Nelson. But come  November, those Florida Republicans are going to choose her over Nelson. That comes to 48% of the vote. So she doesn't need much to get over 50%. That is way too close for comfort.  I tend to agree with him...Most of the Florida republicans I know would rather vote for a monkey than a democrat as long as that monkey was a republican.

Are breaking Democratic according to every poll I have seen nationwide. Why should Florida be different?

Let her have the GOP vote as long as the Democrats and Independents vote Nelson.

      •  Independents in Florida.. (0+ / 0-)

may not be the same as other places. I know a few, and they all voted for Bush..or a few for Nader. Many independents in Florida tend to be the smaller government, libertarian types..at least in the more rural areas. There is a lot of rural in Florida. In the urban areas, you have more typical independents but many urban Floridians are already Democrats. I think we should be careful and not count on independents. Remember, Nelson is not the most liberal of democrats..and those liberal independents that voted for Nader will probably just stay home during an off year election.

        •  Who would you rather run against? (0+ / 0-)

Perhaps if I put it in that light, you will understand why I (in Boca Raton) am celebrating. As best as I can tell, were she to drop out, our choices would be the upstate (Tallahassee) guy Jeb tried to recurit against her. He is a clean slate. I can't even remember his name. Jeb, who is unlikely and would have the problem of his own record and his brother's. Republicans love him and are more likely to rally around him. Gallegher? He has some interesting campaign contributers too. But his baggage doesn't strike me as bad as Harris.

For better or worse, Harris has the most baggage.  I'd rather have an uncontested seat. But not having that, I'll take Harris as the GOP nominee.

Finally as an aside, I know a few Republicans in Florida who voted for Kerry. Or at least that was what they dejectedly told me right after the election. I don't think either one of us knows a representative sample of voters.
