  •  History and Rumsfeld (5+ / 0-)

It must be with the greatest of irony that he speaks of history's measurement of this illegal, immoral, un-Constitutional fiasco.

Doubtless that history will judge Rumsfeld harshly. Surely he knows this, no ?

Rummy would recognize irony if it were an iron skillet and it hit him in the face.

is scheduled for October 2006 (or sooner, if BushCo feels they need to unload him a few months before the election). . .

But didn't Hitler and all his Nazi generals talk a lot about history (meaning both the past AND the future) and about their place in history and being judged by it, and all?

There is some psychological aspect to this invocation of history.

Like Rumsfeld is distancing himself from what he does, and viewing his own actions from a long time ago and far away.

As though he, himself, was not responsible or present in what he does, and as though his deeds were already done and no decisions to be made.

        Nice and tidy, right?

The Italian Minister of the Defense was quoted in Rome's main daily the other day, with regard to the the Italian election campaign currently in progress, as saying:

"“Rumsfeld called me: he’s rooting for the House of Freedoms."

      and:

“Rumsfeld asked me: ‘Do you want a hand?’”

      and:

“The U.S. establishment is rooting for the House of Freedoms. Rumsfeld asked me, ‘What can I do to help you win? Should I say we agree or don’t agree?’”

For those who don't know it, the "House of Freedoms" (Casa delle Libertà) is Berlusconi's center-right coalition.

Unfortunately for voters over here, no one seems to know what Rumsfeld's (and the entire Administration's) real level of "prestige" and credibility is. And such headlines, however small they may be, could have an effect.

As a matter of fact, I was thinking of doing a diary on Rumsfeld's apparent meddling in the Italian election affairs.
