    the extent to which the Republicans are now doing it, especially using new technologies, may make it different in kind, so that it now subverts any pretension of democracy.

    However, if we become aware of its extent and pervasiveness, that may influence the methods we want to see adopted to prevent or at least limit it.

    I, for one, would think more seriously about the Athenians' version of direct democracy, and how they chose most officials not by election, but by lot.
