  •  Cue the apologists and the (9+ / 0-)

"keep your powder dry" chorus.  This is all part of the Democtfarctic Party master strategery, right?

As far as I'm concerned, any day that the Congress isn't tied into proceedural knots, shut down until we get some fucking answers, is another day the Democratic Party has sold out America.

If we have no functioning Congress, then I would think that means there's less prospect of oversight over the President, not more.  The stock answer to any complaint about Republican lack of oversight will be that the Democrats have prevented oversight by shutting down Congress.

It would be one thing to complain, once the Democrats have a majority in at least one house of Congress and therefore some actual power, that they weren't using that power to oppose Bush.  But it's another thing to complain that a largely-powerless minority isn't engaging in the particular mostly-futile procedural stunts that would convince you of their outrage.

Work to give the Democrats majority control of a house, subpeona power, power to direct the course of an investigation to "get some fucking answers", and then we'll have cause to complain if they don't use it.  But don't blame them in advance for not exercising power they haven't really got.

If this post makes me part of the "apologists and the 'keep your powder dry' chorus" in your eyes, so be it.  In my view, I'm not saying we should keep our powder dry, because that implies that one already has powder and weapons to use it in; I'm saying we need to get some more powder and some actual cannons for the Democrats instead of complaining that they haven't put up enough ultimately futile resistance while heavily outgunned.

Shutting down Congress will simply point out the obvious:  That we are living in a dictatorship, which many middle of the roaders find hard to accept, but if you've read your history, you know is unfortunately true.  There is nothing left to do, outside of something dramatic, as all the other less drastic measures available previously have been passed up over and over again.  It's simply to late to just BE Congress, performing their oversight duties as they should have been, as they are simply meaningless at this point.  Yet another toothless investigation?  Harry Reid et al have no idea how to lead us out of this fog, which is why he should simply hand over the reins to someone like Feingold, if not in title, at least in action.  I'm sick of people who think we are still in a game of politics as usual, we are not, and the sooner people can wrap their head around that, the sooner we can do something about it.
