    extrapolate too much about the ultimate state of public sentiment around this from current indications.

    Part of the problem with broader sentiment is a lot of people look to critics to gauge the seriousness of offenses like these. I'd wager that many Americans are uneasy but keep thinking, "Well, I don't like the way this sounds but if it were really a threat to the very framework of our country, I'd be hearing more about it on the news, from Democrats and advocacy groups..."  

    As far as I'm concerned, the jury's not out on the public's tolerance for these transgressions. Most people are still trying to wade through the copious mischaracterizations and spin. And they don't have the benefit of a loud, focused opposition to this, to help them cut through the bullshit.

    As of now, it looks like most people know something uncool is afoot; they're just trying to figure out how uncool it is. I have faith in the vast majority of Americans to get this one right in the end.
