Parking a cruise ship 3 miles off the California coast adjacent to Silicon valley and staffing it with international software engineers and connecting them via phone and computer to companies in the same time Zone?
This was in yesterday's San Jose Mercury -- yeah, really, no joke -- a company is indeed forming to do this.   No need to deal with H1B visas, passports, or for that matter labor regulations, taxes, wage and hour or working conditions rules -- have all the back office accounting, design, and so forth done for Bangladeshi wages with split second turn around time  -----
This really scares me -- not only would these people be able to soak up what lower level professional jobs remain in Silicon valley (just how are our kids going to get started following in our footsteps??) but so much survelliance /industrial espeonage (sorry, pun intended) could be carried out under cover of regular business transactions.
Between software contracts, the workers can attend US colleges on line, send out spam, or run identity theft scams without any restrictions ---

They have been trying to get funding for it for at least that long.

they are bidding on a Celebrity Cruise ship and selling the coding time right now.  Plan is to put it off the coast of LA.  US project managers and people that need face to face contact will be flown out by helicopter when needed.
          Web site seacode.com
Also,  run a google search on seacode  -- the initial publicity was 2005 but they are getting ready to launch right now, or at least have more publicity about it right starting now.
I worry that the people in charge don't think with the depth they need to keep us citizens gainfully employed over the long term.
Even if this venture is successful, I bought it up so that the congressman will see how ingeniously and insidiously the job drain will continue to occur ---

      •  Didn't they do a Simpsons episode on (0+ / 0-)

        something like that?

Seems like it don't turn out all that well for the boat persons . . .

(as an aside, it's rather interesting how FOX tends to balance FOX NEWS . . .  a conspiracy theorist might even suggest that's intentional to keep both sides riled up . . . )
