a slur if you think brown was disparaging.

To a WASP-ish, spoon in the mouth, Ct. old-money Republican "the little brown ones" is a term of endearment, and no, I am not joking.

    •  Yeah, that can't really be called racist (0+ / 0-)

It's no different from pointing to George and Jeb and saying the "little white ones" over there.

If your name was George Walker instead of George Walker Bush, your candidacy would be a joke.

We use such terms of endearment also such as "morenita" or "morenitos" which literally means little brown one also.

Even negrito (little black one) which is said about kids sometime even if they are nowhere near black.  Heck, I was called that when I was growing up in Puerto Rico and I had blonde hair and light skin.

But of course the Bush family are WASPs so their use of the term "little brown ones" is more suspect to me.

      Hey! That wasn't very...

    •  Bush Sr. has been a politician of sorts long (0+ / 0-)

enough to realize that the phrase "the little brown ones" would be misconstrued and taken as offensive by a lot of people. He should know better. And even if it's a term of endearment for some Hispanic cultures, it's not a culture he is a part of. I understand that Jeb wasn't very popular with his parents when he married his Latina wife. To a WASP, and yes I did grow up with some, my mother's family is entirely WASP, it is not a nice thing to say. It's an insult. If anyone said that about George's twins, Bush I would be the first to complain.

..was the context of the comment public or private?

I could have sworn I heard a clip and it sounded like an overheard type of statement...

        ...hmmm.. maybe i am mistaken..

I don't know that I've heard that he was upset with Jeb for marrying a Latina either.

        •  He said it in hearing range of a reporter, (0+ / 0-)

another thing he should know better than to do. And the rumors in Texas were that Jeb's family weren't very pleased when he got married, thought he could have "done better". I have lots of cousins in Texas, and some of them are married to Hispanics, and they took note of this.

the question though is not whether or not he should "know better" - that's the not the standard.  Was it a racist comment?  I don't think so.
