It is a two-level approach to explain why leaders manipulate low-level conflicts to mobilize popular support for expensive, long-term security strategies, and then once the grand strategy is established and the mobilization underway, how and why leaders adapt policies that support it. The interaction between international circumstances and domestic politics is crucial to determining how and why leaders manipulate conflict and ideology—either by stressing or de-stressing them—in order to mobilize support at home for the grand strategy or to preserve that support when it appears threatened.       Looks legit -- though who knows how much plagiarism might be in there.  You can order it through UMI/ProQuest.

      BTW, it's hard for me (an aspiring academic) to imagine writing a diss while simultaneously working for Richard Nixon and Fox News.  Not just the oily side gigs (OK, cheap shot), but the wild amount of work that'd be required.

        The title, Clearer Than Truth, implies deception. As do these lines:
        • ...how and why nations determine, sell, then modify, their core grand strategies...
        • ...why leaders manipulate low-level conflicts to mobilize popular support for expensive, long-term security strategies...
        • how and why leaders adapt policies that support it
        • ...how and why leaders manipulate conflict and ideology...in order to mobilize support at home...
        Its all about constructing versions of the truth to influence behavoir.

            Bleeping exactly.  I thought extreme relativism was one of the left's (indeed, one of humanity's) intellectually weakest ideas in the 90s -- in the present decade it's being used to harm America (i.e. it's being used by the Bush administration).  There was what looked like a big upside at the beginning -- e.g. the use of relativism to promote tolerance for other cultures -- but it's devolved into a much bigger downside, bringing us not only the Bush admin thugs but also the SCLM, which has done so much harm to us in the last four years.

          I skimmed the intro -- seemed legitimately academic (which is what I meant by "legit"; some people were raising doubts about whether or not she had a PhD), but had perceptible Machiavellian overtones.

        Here's a group of selected papers from her advisor.  And here's an image of the social network derived from his name and his associates.  He appears to be from the old school GOP.  Interestingly one of his most recent papers covers how countries can use their intelligence assets to avoid getting fooled.
