Just use gpg. Granted, the NSA can probably crack it, but it takes some pretty serious horsepower to crack 1024ELG or equivalent.

Always be sincere, even if you don't mean it.

    •  NSA has that horsepower. (0+ / 0-)
Encrypting your stuff is still a very good idea, however.
    •  decent quality crypto (1+ / 0-)

Linux users probably already have GPG installed as part of whatever distro they use.

Win/Mac users should grab the freeware version of PGP from (poke around until you find it).

While NSA has the horsepower, I rather suspect that getting the authority to devote that much computer power to decrypt an e-mail means somebody has to ask his boss to sign off on it... which gives the average user fairly good odds that an NSA analyst isn't going to use this for random fishing.

You must assume any crypto (even GPG) could be cracked given enough cycle.  The idea is that if enough traffic is encrypted casual snooping becomes harder / more expensive.

        •  it isn't just a matter of throwing (0+ / 0-)

          CPU cycles at it.

There's always "rubber-hose cryptography" in which the "bad guys" use various persuasion techniques of the kind Gitmo is world-famous for to get your passphrase out of you. You're screwed in this case even if you're using one-time-pad or quantum crypto hardware (not available to general public, barely available to high-end users).

Just figure nothing's 100% secure and act accordingly.
