    •  because it is how the world is viewing (4.00 / 6)

      us and it is the reality of what we are doing

      by seeing this, by knowing what is happening in our name - we can stop it

      we are responsible for this - and that is why we must know about it, respond to it, and put an end this sort of barbaric conduct

      •  And how... (none / 0)

        The part in bold:

        and that is why we must know about it, respond to it, and put an end this sort of barbaric conduct

        How do you propose "we" do this?

        •  we start by knowing what's going on (4.00 / 7)

          and then hold ourselves to account - we don't make excuses

          and then we do what ever is required in the political realm to take back our democracy ---- we still live in a very free society, it is far easier for us to do this that it would be for most of the world's population

          but we start by seeing what's going on

        •  For starters, (4.00 / 4)

          invite your winger acquaintances (assuming you have any) over to your computer screen and make 'em watch.  The corrigible among them might choke on the popcorn you've helpfully microwaved for the show.

        Tom, I couldn't agree more strongly.

        Nearly everyone likes to talk about how "sunshine is a great disinfectant", a position I certainly agree with.  But the ugly truth is that when you drag things out into the open for the photon treatment, you sometimes expose some very nasty, disgusting things.  And the worse those things are, the stronger the case is to haul them out.  I

    •  Surely you're kiddin! (none / 1)

      That's like asking why we need to see the coffins coming home, why should we see the carnage we are reponsible for in Iraq (which we dont' see right now), why we should see photos of OUR dead soldiers, why should we hear about or see the torture done in our name.
      Of course we need to see it. I'll even go further and say some should be forced to view it.
      Unless we know the horrors being perpetrated in our name, how can we stop them? People can shoose to remain ignorant, but we don't have to allow them to be so.
      Sure, it's ugly and painful. It's war! It's death, destruction and mayhem. And it is NEVER good. And whether your country is involved or not, it's important to know and understand its consequences.

       The Heart of Darkness
      I've seen the devil of violence, and the devil of greed, and the devil of hot desire; but, by all the stars! these were strong, lusty, red-eyed devils, that swayed and drove men -- men, I tell you. But as I stood on this hillside, I foresaw that in the blinding sunshine of that land I would become acquainted with a flabby, pretending, weak-eyed devil of a rapacious and pitiless folly.

      The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

      And ever and anon through out his future life an agony constraineth him to travel from land to land ;

      Since then, at an uncertain hour,
      That agony returns :
      And till my ghastly tale is told,
      This heart within me burns.

      I pass, like night, from land to land ;
      I have strange power of speech ;
      That moment that his face I see,
      I know the man that must hear me :
      To him my tale I teach.

      Farewell, farewell ! but this I tell
      To thee, thou Wedding-Guest !
      He prayeth well, who loveth well
      Both man and bird and beast.
      He prayeth best, who loveth best
      All things both great and small ;
      For the dear God who loveth us,
      He made and loveth all.

      The Mariner, whose eye is bright,
      Whose beard with age is hoar,
      Is gone : and now the Wedding-Guest
      Turned from the bridegroom's door.

      He went like one that hath been stunned,
      And is of sense forlorn :
      A sadder and a wiser man,
      He rose the morrow morn.

      Megadeth: "My Kingdom"

      A fighting man sworn to the quest it is the doom of man that they forget
      I have awoken the dragon and all around me the mist of his breath
      Good and evil, there never is one without the other, his brother
      Always there where I least expect it, it will burn me to cinders

      ...Or, with great exaggeration but the same principle....

      In sum, war photography exhibiting the horrors of war has been a positive force, specifically for the United States, from the Civil War and Andersonville all the way up til today. Why would anyone want to expose such images? Eliza Andrews of Georgia agreed with you: "It is dreadful. My heart aches for the poor wretches, Yankees though they are, and I am afraid God will suffer some terrible retribution to fall upon us for letting such things happen. If the Yankees ever should come to southwest Georgia and go to Ander-sonville and see the graves there, God have mercy on the land!"
