  •  Red STATE Blue STATE misleads (none)
I'm quite surprised to see this meme used frequently on dKos.  While the electoral college does reduce the states to single colors, a much more informative map shows the colors by county and weighted by population.  This was widely available after the election -- I cut it out of the paper and saved it.  It tells the true story:  the red/blue divide is not by states, it is by counties.  Specifically, it is a rural/urban divide.  Those states that are more rural tend to fall Red;  those more urban tend to fall Blue.  The cultural conflict implicit in the red/blue divide is not geographic on a national scale -- it is geographic on a small regional scale.  "Blue" people outnumber "red" people nationally (and happen to represent almost everything the middle class values, viz.: education, equal opportunity, etc.).

So let's banish the colored-state meme.  It's Billy-Bob and Darlene in their rural red counties.
