    but not a  peacenik, he was prepared to make sacrifices for the preservation of the Union. I think some of today's liberals might have said: let the South go, there are 2100 dead already, what are we doing there? They don't want us in the South.

      No, it was the moneyed interests in the North (particularly in New York) that wanted to let the South go because they knew that even if was an independent slaveholding plantation, it would still be their colony.

      The liberals of the 1860s, even those with pacifist leanings, generally supported Lincoln and the Civil War. The largest peace faction were the conservatives of the time. A very few wars are necessary and the Civil War was one such war. But most aren't, and the Iraq War is a particularly egregious example.
