James, thanks for bringing this to our attention. You have just made my friend and his partner very happy. They live in VA and just got their adopted son. Now if we can do something about allowing civil unions in VA, that would be awesome!

  We're a long way from civil unions. In fact, the Senate and House have both passed a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage of any form. It will pass again next year and then be voted on in a statewide referendum.

    it's an uphill battle but we can't give up the fight. I don't know if the amendment would pass in a statewide referendum. Have there been any polls done on this?

    Civil Unions would never fly with the current makeup of the House. Not even close. Not even close to close. Look what happened to Delegate Mitch Van Yahres' bill to repeal HB751, which explicitly outlawed civil unions and other partnership agreements between same-sex couples. It didn't stand anything close to a chance.
    (But I love Delegate Van Yahres for introducing it anyway. My respect for him grows immensely every week of this session.)
