Both "Smith Rd." and a street light are directly in front of me when I drive. Neither one distracts me from the map inside of my head.

but the street light is still a landmark, not a distance or direction . . .
All "directions" begin with a landmark (point of reference), even if it's just "where you are". The difference is whether your destination is "South 3.2 miles from the intersection" or "turn right at the intersection, it's across from the CostCo".

I promise you, the difference is VERY real!
And right/left, if an intersection is a clover--that can be extremely confusing. Just give me the compass point. That doesn't change with the type of interchange!
