  •  Roberts is a (none / 1)

pro-choice ('Roe is settled law') judicial activist with a card-carrying feminist wife.

This is a tremendous victory for the left.

    •  I Don't Know About That (none / 0)

As has been pointed out all over the place, any nominee for the appellate bench needs to say a case like Roe is settled law, because they're not supposed to run around overturning precident.

      •  Those Are His Words (none / 0)

If the right doesn't like us calling Roberts pro-choice because he said 'Roe is the settled law of the land,' let them make a huge fuss. If they don't like us claiming his wife as a 'feminist' because she's a 'feminist for life' let them scream and gnash their bicuspids.

Oh, what glorious thing that would be to behold.

        •  I Don't See Your Point (none / 0)

His words from his previous hearing don't bind to him for a position on the Supreme Court.  It's not like they're campaign promises.

          •  My point (none / 1)

has nothing to do with predicting his judicial style, and everything to do with using him as a political football.

What would the political result all lefties--blogs, pundits, columnists--came out tomorrow with a 'triumph for the left' statement, trumpeting Roberts's pro-Roe statement and his 'feminist' wife and his 'judicial activism'?

The right would shit seven kinds of brick. They'd try to  prove he was pro-life, they'd bray that Bush betrayed them, they'd do all the heavy lifting for us. You want to take the nomination down, that's Step One. You only want to wedge the right, that's also Step One.

Sadly, nobody left me in charge of Our Unified Voice. Because that's what we need: bizarre schemes. (Though I still say it'd work.)

    •  Card-darrying feminist? (none / 1)

I don't know if "feminists for life" is really the kind of organization that qualifies as feminist.
    •  You must be joking (none / 0)

You can be certain that Rove & co. have been on the phone with the religious reich leaders assuring them Roberts is their guy, by pointing to his wife's record as a prominent anti-choice activist.
    •  Are you serious?? (none / 1)

Or was that a sarcastic post?

IIRC, the man has represented Operation Rescue and Focus on the Family in court: OK, so it was a paid gig, but last time I looked, lawyers do choose the cases they take. They adopted rather then try assisted technologies because it's against their Catholic beliefs.

And I agree with the others. "Feminists for Life" isn't exactly what I call "feminist", having been one for years. Any organization which works against my making a medical decision solely with my doctor and without a paternalistic "Father Knows Best" politician sticking his nose into my business is about as "feminist" as Phyllis Schlafly.

    •  Not quite... (none / 0)

As i understand it: the "feminist" organization his wife belongs to is an "anti-abortion" group masquerading as a feminist institution. In other words, an attempt at co-opting "feminism"
and using the pre-eminent women's rights movement to oppose women's rights.
