Forgot her; she should be in top consideration.

And most of my favorite female vocalists are altos.  I addition to those already mentioned, there are Gillian Welch, Aimee Mann, Katell Keinig, Tracy Thorn, Patty Smith, Dusty Springfield, k.d. lang, and God knows who else I'm forgetting.

And as for male vocalists, another I love is Gil Scott-Heron.

As for historical importance, I'm not going to argue with you about Armstrong.

I heard a great documentary on him on NPR a couple years back, it was the first I had really listened to the Hot Fives and that other early stuff.  Any recommendations for some good starter stuff by him?

      & work your way back.

Louis Armstrong will always, at any point, delight you.

      He was the Original original.

It's so much about about What he said And How he said it.

If you'll read about him, you'll see how real he was.

But most of all, he invented it all.

He was the 20th century man.

      ani difranco.

i can't believe nobody's mentioned her yet, but i suppose her voice has gotten lost over the past few albums.

go listen to her very early stuff and be blown away by the control and range she had at such a young age.
