    I was being somewhat metaphorical. But why don't we ask the Dutch for help? I mean, practically the whole country there is under sea level. Surely, they'll know some tricks to controlling water.

      Its just that the govt hasnt spent the money to incorporate them in the last 100 years. Catastrophic mismanagement.

        The New Orleans ones were the equivalent of a one in two hundred event.

        something we don't do well. It's a little strategy that most of the developed world (a term I am more and more reluctant to use in regards to ourselves, most recently owing to our wretched response to this destructive event.
        Don't underfund infrastructure.
        Oh, and on that "America's Pompeii" tip (up thread): why do we have to be such a nation of fucking toppers? Can't we just appreciate the enormity of this event without trying to make it the worst disaster the world has ever known? Unless someone from the gulf coast said that, the speaker needs an asskicking.
