I spend so much time thinking of the [evil] our government could and probably is doing that I like to try to prove myself around such things until it becomes unavoidable. if you know what I mean.
I clicked on the link you provided at the bottom of your post and did a little more digging.  the info present is very compelling.
it just seems unlikely that in such a safe neighborhood that such a crime would be comitted and that at such time the perpertrator would not take the time to remove a watch. you had time to beat the man but not to take his watch?  I'm sorry it just doesn't pass the smell test. Add to that the fact that in the police report they mention multiple times the watch was not stolen. if it had been some low end watch it would not have even garnered a mention.
