Never mind the $5/lb. we'll be paying for peppers and peaches.

this is a republican/agribusiness talking point and is crap. i can't find a link or hard numbers on short notice but paying labor a living wage won't spike produce costs.

    •  You don't think agribusiness ... (0+ / 0-)

takes advantage of cheap immigrant labor? They're going to have to pay a real living wage to their workers if decent legislation is passed. And they're gonna do their best to retain their profit margins. Prices may not go all the way up to $5/lb but we're not going to enjoying the fruits of other people's endentured servitude anymore either. My point is Roskam's plan is totally impractical and meant to play on exonphobia.

        You're missing my point

At a local QFC, Red Delicious apples go for about 99 cents a pound. Of that, only about 7 cents represents the cost of labor, said Tom Schotzko, a recently retired extension economist at Washington State University. The rest represents the grower's other expenses, warehousing and shipping fees, and the retailer's markup.

the diarist pointed to $5 per pound produce. actually doubling labor costs by paying a living wage to undocumented aliens, or hiring people at competitive rates, would increase costs a few percent.

saying that produce costs to consumers would skyrocket as a result of not allowing them to abuse undocumented aliens is a republican/agribusiness talking point.

    •  Well, we already pay $3.00 apiece for red peppers (0+ / 0-)

in the winter.  $5.00 would be cheaper than we are paying.  And peaches aren't cheap either.
