It is indeed a street in the bustling Istanbul suburb of Bakirkoy:
This photo was taken by a photographer named Faruk, a member of the wowturkey.com community, and posted there. Check out his portfolio.
(Note: I grabbed a copy of his photo to put onto flickr.com, just to avoid stealing bandwith from the wowturkey.com site and avoid Dailykos traffic crashing that site. I do not intend to steal Faruk's intellectual property. He takes great pictures, by the way!)

This is such an idiotic move by Kaloogian. The damage he will suffer because of this lie is so much worse than anything he could have gained by convincing people that the photo was really Baghdad.
Now, what do you think he will do? Will he:
I think any of these is a possibility, although I would not place my money on the last one.

For mixing up the "real" Baghdad photo with one from their layover in Turkey.
by Fatherflot on Wed Mar 29, 2006 at 10:18:25 AM PDT
It will be interesting to see if the "real" Baghdad photo (if it exists) also presents an image of a bustling, peaceful, modern city.

Bagdad, California, main drag.
Today, 7/4/08, 4113 Americans, and untold Iraqis are dead, tens of thousands more maimed. Bush lied, how soon before your family pays the price for that?

...Pitty I didn't manage to spot it somehow yesterday; I surfed that site intensively.
Perhaps you should start a separate diary on this discovery; this one takes simply too long to load. You have my Recommendation.

Hope you didn't stay up all night to catch that. :-)

So, what will be the implications? I hope this will get some coverage.

While I was looking for it in southeastern turkey, you slam dunked it near Istanbul. Great instincts. Great work!!!!

in the 4th picture of photographer Faruk here
The 5th picture seems to have been taken from the other side of the street; notice the McDonald's (so know we know where kaLOONYgan went, supposing of course he did take the pic himself :-) )

Well done! Bravo! My best regards!
Nice catch. I went and compared it to the picture myself. Yuppers. The "key" point isn't the smaller billboard, which could be in the Kurdick region of Iraq, I guess. But the larger one. The guy who wants to be "The Fly". You can clearly make it out in the other picture.

You got it.
Yes make a diary and we will recommend (if you haven't already)
And thanks to everyone for their work on this. I am also glad we have the skeptics too because they kept the whole process honest.
And you know, this was fun.

Great work. I have been googling images from istanbul ever since this broke and couldn't find it. There is no question that this is the place and from the sourcing that you have added should be easily verified.
Have you emailed the Busby group about this information yet? This will be great ammunition and couldn't have come at a better time.

when i saw that photo, i said to myself "the language is turkish" (can't speak it, but it's a very unique looking language), and "the city is istanbul" (never been there, but i've seen multiple viewings of Topkapi, Five Fingers, From Russia With Love, as well as countless travelogues, all while staying at a holiday inn, of course :-)).
from his name, i'm guessing Kaloogian is of armenian descent. kind of a nice irony that he get's kneecapped for trying to pass off a turkish street scene as a typical day in peaceful, pacified, Baghdad.
