But on so many of the issues that matter, he doesn't vote with the party.  (for example, some his votes on Iraq)  Additionally, voting with the party is not necessarily a great indicator.  Lawless would vote with the progressive members of the Democratic Party and be an additional outspoken voice on behalf of progressive causes.
