I thought some of the most traditional branches of Judaism hold that if you are born of a Jewish mother you are Jewish; if not you are not. And I had the impression that some of the most traditional don't recognize joining or leaving on your own.

Plus, and I'll admit I haven't kept up on this, but my impression is that Allen has Jewish roots through his mother, not that she is/was a Jew.

She was raised Jewish and considered herself Jewish growing up. That came out in the tearful interview with her.

As far as I'm concerned, Allen's whatever is going to make him lose his cool in public. Senator Macacawitz is simply piling all his troubles on him. If it makes him turn red, start spluttering, and curse out reports, lets go for it!

Reform Judaism accepts patrilineal descent. But in this case, the child must be raised in the Jewish religion.
