How do they get away with omitting the central statement of their own Savior's philosophy?
Been reading John Dean's book, and he explains the Christianists thus (in part): Many evangelicals believe that because they have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior, they are Saved and are bound for heaven. Thus anything they say or do is right and Godly because they are the Elect. They don't pause to further examine their actions or beliefs any further, and feel no need to. This, he says, is called "cheap grace" by other Christians who have a different view, and who appear to have read their unredacted Bibles more closely.
This is part of his discussion of the authoritarian personality types. Not finished yet, but his descriptions are deeply scary, and yet hopeful. These are very very bad people and we must defeat them. They are so bad, however, that our chances are good. We just need to make sure they are thoroughly marginalized in politics for generations to come.

I can't wait to read Dean's book. I've seen him interviewed several times and it's been fascinating. Thanks for the interesting comment.

that part of the Protestant rebellion was against the Roman Catholic superstitions, like confession to a priest absolving one's sins... One could argue that at least the RC recognized when they had sinned. Interesting side note: read this in the NYT about a new wave of Protestant confession...over the internet! Intimate Confessions

just saw him interviewed on CNN. I read "Worse Than Watergate"; I'm currently reading "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy" by Greg Palast (already read "Armed Madhouse") and I'm also reading "Fiasco" by Thomas Ricks. John Dean's most recent book is next on my list. Oh, yeah, I'm also going to buy Helen Thomas' book.
