I find myself in agreement with much of the values your review of her book implies. Although, having been on the planet for awhile (more than 60 years), I think it is too late for the US to make changes in lifestyle to reverse the environmental damge caused by our consumptive behavior. I have heard the cries for a "steady state", or sustainable economy in the past, but things only worsened. Just the mere fact that a person like GWB was elected to office, indicates to me that there are far too many in our society that share the corrupted values of those we call leaders.
Wouldn't it be great if we had "humanism" instead of "capitalism". That is, if our efforts were geared to human development rather than ownership of material things. How about competing for the world's healthiest people? Awarding countries for saving the most lives, instead of taking them. Or how about rewarding countries that have the highest GDP with the lowest consumption of resources? Wouldn't that be something?
